Best RV Mattresses

Anju Woldt

A trip in an RV is unlike any other--a combination of the indoors and outdoors, the conveniences of home combined with the pleasures of natures. Days on winding roads, nights parked by the lake, catching fish in the wild and then cooking them on a real stove top. It’s a unique experience and one that shouldn’t be missed.

But there’s one thing that can make an RV trip miserable: a bad mattress.

Mattresses in RVs have a stigma of being uncomfortable, and there’s a reason for that: RV manufacturers are doing their best to keep the weight of the RV down as low as possible, and that means cutting corners on some of the creature comforts that accompany the RV lifestyle. Thinner mattresses, smaller mattresses, some cut into odd shapes to fit into unusual spaces. Of course, there’s always a trade off--if you want to put more people in the RV, or more food, or more outdoor gear, you’re going to have to cut weight somewhere--but does it really have to be the mattress? After all, you’re sleeping in an RV partially because you don’t want to be curled up in a sleeping bag on top of rocks and pinecones. You want comfort. So is there a way you can get both: a good night’s sleep and a perfectly-sized mattress.

Types of RV Mattresses

Innerspring Mattresses:

These are your typical mattresses: coils on the inside that give it bounce and lift, hidden within padding. If you’ve slept on any bed made before 2005, odds are you slept on an innerspring mattress. They can be comfortable when they’re new, but they also have a tendency to accumulate moisture and need to be aired out, or used in a well-ventilated RV.

Memory Foam Mattresses:

These are more comfortable than innerspring mattresses, using technology developed by NASA to adjust to the conforms of your body. It helps give support, alleviate back and neck pain, and the foam responds to your movement. The downside of a traditional memory foam mattress is that it can get warm and sticky. Fortunately, that’s about the only problem with it, as it’s hypoallergenic, long-lasting, and fells so good to lie in one.

Air Bed:

If you really want to save weight in your RV, you can always opt for the air bed, but they have the effect of sleeping on a big balloon. It can get warm and, much worse, it can get punctured or split, and then it’s all over in the blink of an eye.

Hybrid:

The best of all worlds is the hybrid mattress that combines the contour-following design of a memory goal mattress with the heat-wicking capabilities of a gel topped mattress. That’s what we offer at Dynasty Mattress: the foam-base support of the best memory foam bed topped with inches of Cool Airflow Super Soft Foam Support Layers, including a 2” high density gel memory foam layer. And it won’t wear out in ten or fifteen year: it comes with a limited 30 year warranty.

Sizes

RV mattresses can come in a variety of sizes, some of which aren’t what you’d find in a typical mattress store. This is because they’re trying to fit a bed into the most economical space available. But if it’s your priority, you can get Queen RV mattresses, King RV mattresses, and “short kings”, which are the width of a king but shorter by a few inches to save space. The good news is that these mattresses aren’t hard to come by through Dynasty Direct, and at reasonable prices.

Your RV is special--you’ll create memories on your camping and cross-country trips that you won’t ever forget--so why spend all of that good time on mattress that keeps you up all night and doesn’t let you enjoy your time away.
