How to Shop for an Adjustable Mattress

Anju Woldt

An adjustable bed can be a life changer if you find the right one. You don’t realize how valuable a good night’s sleep is until you miss one. But how to buy an adjustable bed?

When you’re shopping for a bed, there’s a lot to consider. And an adjustable bed is a great place to start because it customizes your bed experience—you can get just what you want, when you want it, with the flexibility to change things up should the need arise.

What Makes an Adjustable Mattress Adjustable?

Whether it’s a twin XL or a king size, an adjustable mattress is one that moves with the motion of the adjustable bed frame. This requires a special mattress, as a traditional spring mattress simply won’t bend the way an adjustable bed needs it to. An adjustable mattress is almost always memory foam, and we recommend CoolBreeze Gel Memory Foam mattresses for a cool, comfortable night’s sleep.

Features of an Adjustable Bed

For a lot of people, when they think of adjustable beds, they think of hospital beds. But adjustable beds have reached the 21st century, and they’re so much more than what they used to be. Here are a few of the options available:

Adjustability

This may seem like a no-brainer, but having a power base that can raise your head, arms and legs can solve so many health problems. You’ll be able to sleep without worrying about acid reflux. You’ll have a better chance at anti-snoring, as sleeping in an adjustable bed helps with sleep apnea. And you’ll just be more comfortable overall, which means that when you get out of bed in the morning you’ll be feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Wireless vs. Wired Control:

Some beds—like that hospital bed—still have a paddle attached to a cord that connects you to your bed controls. That’s fine for some people, and it might even be good for someone who is prone to losing their controller, but now beds are coming with features rivaling the best TVs and they have remote controls to match. Even better, some beds now have wifi control, where you arrange your bed with your phone.

Massage:

This is one of the most common features of an adjustable bed, and one of the things that many people are looking for. But not all massagers are the same, so you’ll want to experience it before you buy and assume all massagers are created equal.

Wall Hugger:

This refers to whether or not the bed moves away from the wall when you adjust it, or whether it moves up and “hugs” the wall. This will definitely affect the way your room feels and looks, and how your bed will fit in it, so you’ll want to consider it.

Battery Backup:

This is the ability for the bed to return to its flat position in case the power goes out. You don’t want to be caught in an awkward position during an emergency. If you have difficulty getting in and out of bed, this should be valuable to you.

Headboard Brackets:

An adjustable bed frame doesn’t typically come with a headboard, so if you’re using a traditional bed and headboard currently and want the same headboard when you switch to a new bed (or get a new headboard) you’re going to want a bed with headboard brackets.

Bed Size:

Adjustable beds use different sized mattresses than traditional beds. Twin and Full XL sizes are 80” long instead of a standard 74”. The Split King beds (our most popular) come split down the middle—so both sides can be adjusted separately. There is also the regular King which is one large base with no individual control.

Warranties:

People often want to know: how long do adjustable beds last? And how long do adjustable bed bases last? Warranties vary widely from manufacturer to manufacturer (and some retailers offer warranties on top of the manufacturers’.)

You’ll want to consider the warranty carefully, as an adjustable bed isn’t something that you can easily take into the mechanic shop. You’ll want to know that you’re covered for anything that goes wrong. The best warranty will be one that covers you for both parts and labor.

Mattress Choice:

It’s important to remember that an adjustable bed base is different from the mattress. You could have a great base and a bad mattress (or vice versa) and be miserable. There are many things to consider when buying a mattress, such as thickness, whether it’s memory foam or gel or latex.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether a thick mattress will be better or worse (a thicker may be more comfortable to lay on, but may hinder flexibility). It’s important to rely on experience and customer reviews.
